Our History

Edward Raymond (Ray) Williams came to the local area from his birthplace of Bala, North Wales and started a career at Arthur Lord and Sons, the major painting firm in Rochdale at the time. He was employed by Arthur Lord for over 20 years, working his way up from tradesman to director.

Ray founded E.R. Williams in 1970, quickly establishing the company’s philosophy of providing a reliable, quality service and a consistently excellent standard of work, which still holds true today. Ray believed in never leaving site unless he was proud of the quality of work delivered.

The company has always been a family endeavour. Ray retired in 1997 and his son Bill took on the role of Managing Director. Bill has worked in the business for almost 40 years, beginning his career as an apprentice.

Ray’s daughter Ruth joined the business in 1985, whilst studying for a BA in Business Studies and later took up the role of Company Secretary.

Our Contracts Manager is Bill Williams Jnr, the third generation of the family who joined the business more recently in 2009.

Over the years, the company has grown in reputation and size with a focus on outstanding customer service and the original values of pride in the ‘job done’ evident throughout the business.

Following his retirement, Ray focused on his passion for breeding Shire horses. Pictured above is Ray with one of his award-winning shires.
